Neighbors. Valya and Vitya. Valentina Weiss

Neighbours. Valya and Vitya. Valentina Weiss
Valya and Vitya were our neighbors. They also had two children - girls Christina and Nastya, practically the age of our children. We became friends. Our children visited the House of Scientists together. And we often rode a big company on the bus after class home. On the bus, the children sang English songs, sang very loudly. Once I heard an interesting conversation between the girls. Christine with a very serious look told her friends that she was going to become a poetess, that she was good at writing poetry. Rada said she wants to be a pianist, we really bought her a piano and dragged him to the 9th floor. And Sylvia sat and thought for a long time, and then said that she was nobody and that she would probably be an artist because she loved drawing on wallpaper!
The family of Vitya and Vali also left Ukraine for Israel and we had a very sad farewell at the station. Their youngest girl, Nastya, was then only five years old and she waved to us with Rada from the window and shouted: "Goodbye Motherland, goodbye to the Soviet Union." We were very, very sad.
In addition to Vali and Vitya, a woman named Luda lived in our house, right on our floor. I remember her very well. She had a daughter and husband a sailor. HER husband often went on a business and Luda loved to drink. Sometimes she knocked on our door in the early morning and invited her to share with her breakfast with glass of vodka. It was very tough. She had a friend in our entrance, and they left the children at home, put them to bed and went all night on a walk.
When after a while we managed to make an exchange of the apartment to another more acceptable area, I became very, very careful in close acquaintance with the neighbors.
In this apartment, I had one very terrible incident and I will tell you about it. One morning, my neighbor Lyuda came to me again and invited me to join her on the market. The market was very close to our house, right across the road. When she arrived, the girls and I were busy to create some stuff. Human figures were molded from plastic, and instead of arms and legs, matches were attached to them. Then these figures had to be baked in the oven. Luda found us at the moment when we had already turned on the oven and waited until the figures were ready. She baffled me and I packed up and went with her completely forgetting about the figures. At that time, Rada was about 7 years old, and Sylvia 5. I left them at home.
When we returned, I noticed that the windows of the apartment were open to the people and I understood the horror of what happened. The girls played in the room, then smelled smoke and went into the kitchen. They opened the door and saw a fire in the stove. It flashed match toys legs and handles. The girls were not taken aback, but immediately jumped out of the apartment into a common corridor and began to call for help. The neighbor called back, the former captain, and he buried his face in a blanket and entered the kitchen and put out the fire. I will never forgive myself for such negligence and always recall with horror this incident.
