This week, looking at the weather forecast, we realized that it had been snowing in Troodos for several days. Sylvia and her children had already gone there earlier. I was lucky enough to go with them on this tar and it was a real miracle. Just imagine, just 50 km from Limassol there is a real winter fairy tale. It was hard to believe. After driving for about 40 minutes and climbing up the mountains, we noticed tiny snowflakes, which quickly turned into a real snowfall. It seemed that on this day, all the inhabitants of the island decided to go to the mountains. A huge traffic jam formed on the road. We decided not to go up to Troodos and got out at the first possible parking lot. And before us opened the beauty of a pine forest with snow-covered trees, real snow, which I had not seen for many, many years, happy children and adults riding on modern sleds. It was wonderful.
We had already been to the Troodos Mountains when we visited our best Cypriot friend Chris, but we had never seen such a miracle.

Troodos
Do you know what is the largest and most ancient landmark of Cyprus? A landmark so large that it can be seen from an airplane.
This is Troodos, which is also called the ancestor of Cyprus. The mountain range was formed 70 million years ago!

Let’s get to know each other better
Troodos (Greek: Τρόοδος) is located in the western part of Cyprus. The mountains are famous for their resorts, picturesque mountain villages and Byzantine monasteries and churches, the most famous of which is the Kykkos Monastery, founded in the 11th century.

The highest point is Mount Olympus, practically Olympus – the mountain where all the gods of ancient Hellas “registered”! (1952 m).

Troodos is climatically “Another Cyprus”. Cool mountain forests spread out on the mountain slopes. And nature changes several climatic zones from the foot to the peaks. This is a place where you can always find shelter from the heat in the heat of the moment.
The climate of the Troodos mountain range, like Cyprus as a whole, is Mediterranean – with dry hot summers and cool and humid winters. Due to the altitude and mountainous relief, Troodos receives the maximum amount of precipitation in Cyprus, in some years their amount exceeds 1000 mm per year. Snowfalls occur every winter, and around the top of Olympus the snow cover lasts 3-4 months a year.

There are real mushroom forests here, and in winter the mountains and their slopes are an ideal place for skiing. The old-timers and living relics of Cyprus are the cedar elders and centuries-old oaks. The “Oak of Kings”, which is located halfway from Limassol to Troodos near the village of Lania, is more than 800 years old. The huge ancient tree literally has its roots in the history of Cyprus. According to one legend, it was planted personally by Richard the Lionheart.

Despite the fact that Troodos is far from the sea within walking distance, there are a huge number of attractions associated with water. These are Cypriot reservoirs, waterfalls, dams.

For example, the Xyliatos Dam is a reflection of wild vegetation in the calm waters of the reservoir. Thanks to the rains that overflowed the dam, the drain now resembles a picturesque waterfall. And the reservoir itself is a heavenly place for relaxation. Here you can walk along the tourist trail to enjoy the beauty of the natural landscape. Or you can go kayaking and capture this unimaginable sight.

Separately, we note the object, which is also called the “Eye of Cyprus”. It is located high in the mountains, in the very heart of the island.
Previously, it was a high mountain, which was later turned into an asbestos mine, in which for decades, people in difficult conditions, mined asbestos. As a result, the mine turned into a crater.

Now the crater is completely filled with water and looks very unusual, as if from another world. Thanks to the Department of Forestry, which, as part of the restoration of the mine, built an artificial lake in this crater with 40,000 cubic meters of water!

Troodos is a real collection of waterfalls. Some of them are unique. For example, surrounded by wild landscapes in the abandoned village of Trozena in Cyprus, you can see a landscape of heavenly beauty – the Paradision waterfalls. In addition to the fact that this is a rare sight – water breaks through the rocks and only happens after winters with a lot of precipitation and snow, seeing this unique phenomenon in Cyprus is considered a good omen for the entire coming year.

The waterfalls of Mesa Potamos, Kantara, Millomeris, and Caledonia are very popular with both tourists and residents of the coast.

Цього тижня, дивлячись на прогноз погоди, ми зрозуміли, що у Тродосі вже кілька днів йде сніг. Сільвія з дітьми ще раніше їздили туди. На це тар мені пощастило поїхати з ними і це було справжнє диво. Уявіть собі, лише за 50 км від Лімассола розташована справжня зимова казка. Повірити у це було складно. Проїхавши хвилин 40 і піднявшись в гори, ми помітили малесенькі сніжинки, які всколи переросли в справжній снігопад. Здавалося, що саме цього дня всі жителі острова вирішили поїхати в гори. На дорозі утворився величезний затор. Ми вирішили не підніматися у Тродос і вийшли на першій можливій парковці. І, перед нами відкрилася краса соснового лісу із запорошеними деревами, справжнього снігу, який я лично не бачила вже багато, багато років, щасливих дітлахів та дорослих, що катаються на сучасних санчатах. Це було чудово.
У горах Тродоса ми раніше вже побували, коли були в гостях нашого найкращого кіпрського друга Кріса, але такого дива ми ще не бачили.

Тродос
Знаєте, що є найбільшою і найдавнішою пам’яткою Кіпру? Визначною пам’яткою настільки масштабною, що її видно з борту літака.
Це – Троодос, який ще називають прародителем Кіпру. Гірський масив утворився 70 мільйонів років тому!

Познайомимося ближче
Тро́одос (грец. Τρόοδος) знаходяться в західній частині Кіпру. Гори відомі своїми курортами, мальовничими гірськими селами та візантійськими монастирями та церквами, з яких найбільш відомий монастир Кіккос, заснований у XI столітті.

Найвища точка – гора Олімбос, майже Олімп – гора, де «прописалися» всі боги стародавньої Еллади! (1952 м).

Троодос – це кліматично «Інший Кіпр». На схилах гір розкинулися прохолодні ліси. А природа від підніжжя до вершин змінює кілька кліматичних поясів. Це місце, де в самий пекло завжди можна знайти притулок від спеки.
Клімат гірського масиву Троодос, як і Кіпру в цілому, — середземноморський — із сухим спекотним літом та прохолодною та вологою зимою. Завдяки висоті та гірському рельєфу у Троодосі випадає максимальна кількість опадів на Кіпрі, в окремі роки їх кількість перевищує 1000 мм на рік. Снігопади відбуваються кожної зими, а навколо вершини Олімбосу сніговий покрив зберігається 3-4 місяці на рік.

Тут є справжні грибні ліси, а взимку гори та їх схили ідеальне місце для лижних прогулянок. Старожилами та живими реліктами Кіпру є старці-кедри та вікові дуби. “Дубу королів”, який знаходиться на півдорозі з Лімассола в Троодос біля села Ланії понад 800 років. Величезне стародавнє дерево в буквальному значенні корінням сягає історії Кіпру. За однією з легенд його посадив особисто Річард Левине Серце.

Незважаючи на те, що від моря Троодос знаходиться далеко не в кроковій доступності, тут величезна кількість пам’яток, пов’язаних з водою. Це кіпрські водосховища, водоспади, греблі.

Наприклад, дамба Ксиліатос – це відображення дикої рослинності в спокійних водах водосховища. Завдяки дощу, що переповнила дамбу, водосток тепер нагадує мальовничий водоспад. А саме водосховище – райське місце для відпочинку. Тут можна прогулятися вздовж туристської стежки, щоби насолодитися красою природного пейзажу. А можна покататися на каяках і сфотографувати це неймовірне видовище.

Окремо відзначимо об’єкт, який ще називають «Оком Кіпру». Він розташований високо у горах, у самому серці острова.
Раніше це була висока гора, яку пізніше перетворили на азбестову шахту, де протягом десятиліть, люди у важких умовах, добували азбест. У результаті шахта перетворилася на кратер.

Зараз кратер повністю наповнений водою і виглядає дуже незвично, начебто з іншого світу. Дякую Департаменту лісового господарства, який у рамках реставрації шахти, збудував у цьому кратері штучне озеро на 40 000 кубометрів води!

Троодос це справжня колекція водоспадів. Деякі їх унікальні. Наприклад, в оточенні диких ландшафтів в покинутому селі Трозена на Кіпрі можна побачити пейзаж небесної краси – водоспади Парадісіон. Крім того, що це рідкісне видовище – вода пробивається через скелі і буває тільки після зим з великою кількістю опадів і снігу, побачити на Кіпрі це унікальне явище вважається гарним.

Великою популярністю як у туристів, так і у мешканців узбережжя користуються водоспади Меса Потамос, Кантара, Мілломеріс, Каледонія.
