CASTLE Of Good Hope The castle was built in the form of a five-pointed star according to the idea of the French military engineer Wauben, who was in the service of King Louis 14. Construction began under Jan von Riebeck in 1652. Local materials were used for the construction – yellow wood (today the symbol of South Africa), the forest was cut down in Howth Bay, shell rocks from Table Mountain and shells from Robin Island. There were problems with the transportation of materials, as the soldiers considered it very hard work and expressed their dissatisfaction, but after they were punished, the work continued. In the first year of his service, Jan von Riebeck visited Robin’s Island, discovered there opportunities not only for the extraction of stagnant materials, but also the possibility of setting up a prison on the island.
