П'ята осінь на Кіпрі. Гроза. Боги стародавньої Еллади.

Закінчилося наше п'яте літо на острові. І про його закінчення нам повідомив сам Зевс: на нас обрушився грозовий шторм, а грім гуркотів так, як ще ніколи в житті не чула. Небо не лише голосно гуркотіло, а й буквально тріскотіло.

І в цей момент я згадала багато про що.

По-перше, про те, що на острів ми потрапили не за власним бажанням, ми втекли від війни. Місцевий спосіб життя і бруд на вулицях ніяк не сприяли роздумам про грецьку міфологію і тим більше про незриму присутність на острові богів Стародавньої Еллади.

Адже з дитинства я захоплювалася міфами і навіть знала у подробицях, хто кого народив і хто доводиться.

А вже третій рік я вивчаю грецьку мову – про це я ніколи раніше навіть не думала. Тож у цьому житті, мабуть, нічого не буває випадковим. І я вирішила підготуватися та дізнатися докладніше, хто саме з богів безпосередньо пов'язаний із Кіпром.

І почнемо, мабуть, не з богів, а з гори Олімп.

Я чула, що у Троодосі знаходиться гора Олімп. Гори Троодос - найбільша гірська система Кіпру, розташована у центральній та західній частинах острова. Це унікальний природний заповідник та культурний центр, де знаходиться найвища точка Кіпру – гора Олімп (1952 метри), а також знамениті виноробні села та стародавні монастирі.

Я насправді завжди вважала, що Олімп перебуває у Греції.

А тепер – про богів і богинь.

Усі знають легенду про народження Афродіти. Вона народилася з морської піни саме на Кіпрі, і тут є місце, яке ми відвідали першого року нашого життя в Лімассолі.

Афродіта (Кіпріда) – найважливіша богиня для Кіпру. За легендою, у викладі Гесіода вона народилася з білої морської піни біля берегів Пафосу, в місці під назвою Петра-ту-Роміу (Скеля Афродіти). Тому її часто називали Кіпрідою (Cyprian). У Пафосі був головний центр її культу в усьому античному світі.

Адоніс – бог весняного відродження, рослинності та краси, смертний коханий Афродіти. За міфами, він народився на Кіпрі від принцеси Мірри. А на півострові Акамас розташовані знамениті «Купальні Афродіти» та «Ванни Адоніса», де за легендою закохані таємно зустрічалися.

🛡️ Арес та Гефест. Бог війни Арес і бог-коваль Гефест пов'язані з Кіпром через Афродіту. Гефест, будучи її законним чоловіком та покровителем металургії, кував для неї прикраси та золоті палаци в лісах Акамаса, що, можливо, перегукується з багатими покладами міді на Кіпрі. Арес був таємним коханцем Афродіти – саме з ним її й застав Гефест.

☀️ Аполлон Хілат. Бог мистецтв та зцілення, глибоко шанований на острові. На південному узбережжі, неподалік стародавнього Куріону, знаходяться руїни величного Святилища Аполлона Хілата (Лісового), що вважався захисником кіпрських лісів і дикої природи.

🍇 Діоніс - бог виноробства та веселощів, що залишив свій слід на острові, відомому своїми давніми виноробними традиціями. Крім того, на Кіпрі поважали його дружину Аріадну. За однією з версій міфу Тесей залишив вагітну Аріадну на узбережжі Кіпру, в Аммаусі, де вона померла під час пологів і згодом обожнювалася.

Fifth Autumn in Cyprus. Thunderstorm. Gods of Ancient Greece.

Our fifth summer on the island had ended. And Zeus himself announced its end: a thunderstorm descended upon us, and the thunder roared like I'd never heard before. The sky not only rumbled loudly, but literally cracked.

And at that moment, I remembered many things.

First, that we hadn't come to the island by choice; we had fled from war. The local way of life and the filthy streets didn't exactly encourage reflection on Greek mythology, much less the invisible presence of the gods of Ancient Greece on the island.

After all, I'd been fascinated by myths since childhood and even knew in detail who gave birth to whom and who was related to whom.

And for three years now, I've been learning Greek—something I'd never even considered before. So, apparently, nothing in this life is accidental. So I decided to do my homework and learn more about which gods are directly associated with Cyprus.

And let's start, perhaps, not with the gods, but with Mount Olympus.

I've heard that Mount Olympus is located in Troodos. The Troodos Mountains are the largest mountain range in Cyprus, located in the central and western parts of the island. It's a unique nature reserve and cultural center, home to Cyprus's highest point, Mount Olympus (1,952 meters), as well as famous wine-growing villages and ancient monasteries.

Actually, I always thought Olympus was in Greece.

And now, about the gods and goddesses.

Everyone knows the legend of Aphrodite's birth. She was born from sea foam in Cyprus, and there is a place there that we visited during our first year in Limassol.

Aphrodite (Cypris) is the most important goddess in Cyprus. According to legend, as told by Hesiod, she was born from the white sea foam off the coast of Paphos, at a place called Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock). Therefore, she was often called Cypris (Cyprian). Paphos was the main center of her cult throughout the ancient world.

Adonis is the god of spring rebirth, vegetation, and beauty, the mortal lover of Aphrodite. According to myths, he was born in Cyprus to Princess Myrra. The Akamas Peninsula is home to the famous "Baths of Aphrodite" and "Baths of Adonis," where, according to legend, the lovers secretly met.

🛡️ Ares and Hephaestus. Ares, the god of war, and Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths, are connected to Cyprus through Aphrodite. Hephaestus, her legal husband and patron of metallurgy, forged jewelry and golden palaces for her in the Akamas forests, possibly alluding to the rich copper deposits in Cyprus. Ares was Aphrodite's secret lover—it was with him that Hephaestus found her.

☀️ Apollo Hylates. God of the arts and healing, deeply revered on the island. On the southern coast, near ancient Kourion, lie the ruins of the majestic Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates (of the Woods), considered the protector of Cypriot forests and wildlife.

🍇 Dionysus, the god of wine and revelry, left his mark on the island, known for its long-standing winemaking traditions. His wife, Ariadne, was also revered in Cyprus. According to one version of the myth, Theseus abandoned the pregnant Ariadne on the coast of Cyprus, in Ammaus, where she died during childbirth and was subsequently deified.
