Цього тижня я думала про образи грецьких богів і про те, який живий слід вони могли залишити на Кіпрі. Поспілкувавшись зі своїм Алексом (ІІ), ми провели чудове розслідування та дійшли таких висновків. Головні божества, такі як Зевс, Аїд та Посейдон (в римській традиції Нептун), уособлюють сили природи, тоді як багато інших персонажів міфів справді мали земне втілення.

Ось кілька яскравих прикладів:

Геракл (Геркулес) — один із головних кандидатів на роль реальної людини. Його прообразом, ймовірно, став могутній і харизматичний правитель або воєначальник з Тірінфа, який жив у мікенську епоху. За століття його реальні військові походи та атлетичні перемоги обросли легендами про гідру та левів.

Тесей: легендарний засновник Афін. Історики сходяться на думці, що Тесей – це збиральний образ справжнього царя (чи кількох правителів), який об'єднав розрізнені громади Аттики у єдину державу і звільнив Афіни від політичної залежності від Криту (що у міфах трансформувалося на вбивство Мінотавра в Лабіринті).

Асклепій (Ескулап): У легендах він є богом медицини, сином Аполлона. Однак у гомерівській «Іліаді», що описує події ближче до реальності, Асклепій згадується не як бог, а як смертний та надзвичайно вправний лікар, чиї сини лікували поранених під Троєю. Лише згодом його постать повністю обожнювали.

Учасники Троянської війни (Ахілл, Агамемнон, Одіссей): Після того, як Генріх Шліман розкопав справжню Трою, стало очевидно, що війна справді сталася. Це означає, що царі Ахейської Греції, які штурмували місто, мали під собою реальні історичні прототипи, біографії яких поети прикрасили божественним походженням.

Діоніс: Навколо цього бога виноробства та екстазу досі точаться суперечки. Багато дослідників вважають, що в основі культу Діоніса лежала історія реального релігійного реформатора чи проповідника, який приніс до Греції нові ритуали з Фракії чи Лідії, а після смерті зарахованого до пантеону олімпійців.

Саме ці роздуми надихнули мене на те, щоб ходити вулицями Лімасола і вдивлятися в обличчя перехожих, шукаючи в них нащадків богів — адже багато хто з цих героїв має або мав свої поховання на нашому острові.

І ось що мені вдалося виявити:

1. Адоніс (Священний гай і гробниця в Аммаусі)

Адоніс — прекрасний юнак-мисливець та коханий Афродіти, який загинув на полюванні від ікол дикого кабана. За однією з версій міфу це сталося на кіпрському мисі Акамас.

Де поклонялися: Стародавнє місто Аматус (на околицях сучасного Лімасола). Історик Плутарх згадував, що в Аммаусі існував священний гай Адоніса та Афродіти, де люди поклонялися його «могилі». Як бог природи, що в'яне і воскресає, він ритуально «помирав» і «воскресав» щовесни.

2. Аріадна (Гробниця в Амамусі)

Відповідно до рідкісної, але зафіксованої Плутархом кіпрської версії міфу, Тесей, врятувавшись з критського Лабіринту, втік разом з Аріадною (дочкою царя Міноса). Однак під час шторму їхній корабель прибило до берегів Кіпру. Тесей був змушений зійти на суходіл, а вагітну Аріадну віднесло в море. Місцеві жінки дбали про неї, але вона померла під час пологів.

Де розташована: Те саме місто Аматус. Плутарх писав, що Тесей згодом повернувся і залишив гроші на ритуали на її честь, а саму гробницю Аріадни облаштували у священному гаю, який місцеві жителі називали «Гайєм Аріадни-Афродіти».

3. Тевкр (Засновник Саламіна)

Тевкр – легендарний герой Троянської війни, найкращий лучник грецького війська та брат великого Аякса. Після падіння Трої батько вигнав Тевкра із рідного острова Саламін (у Греції). Тевкр приплив на Кіпр і заснував тут нове місто, назвавши його на честь батьківщини — Саламін (руїни якого розташовані неподалік Фамагусти).

Історичний слід: Хоча точне місцезнаходження кургану втрачено, античні джерела стверджували, що Тевкр правив Кіпром до кінця своїх днів і був з почестями похований на території заснованого ним королівства Саламін, ставши родоначальником місцевої царської династії.

Were the gods of myth human? Limassol, September 2026

This week I have been thinking about the images of the Greek gods and what living trace they may have left on Cyprus. After talking with my Alex (II), we conducted a wonderful investigation and came to the following conclusions. The main deities, such as Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon (Neptune in the Roman tradition), personify the forces of nature, while many other characters in myths really had earthly incarnations.

Here are some striking examples:

Hercules (Hercules) is one of the main candidates for the role of a real person. His prototype was probably a powerful and charismatic ruler or military leader from Tiryns, who lived in the Mycenaean era. Over the centuries, his real military campaigns and athletic victories have become overgrown with legends about the hydra and lions.

Theseus: The legendary founder of Athens. Historians agree that Theseus is a composite image of a real king (or several rulers), who united the disparate communities of Attica into a single state and who freed Athens from political dependence on Crete (which in myths was transformed into the killing of the Minotaur in the Labyrinth).

Asclepius (Aesculapius): In legends, he is the god of medicine, the son of Apollo. However, in Homer's Iliad, which describes events closer to reality, Asclepius is mentioned not as a god, but as a mortal and extremely skilled physician, whose sons treated the wounded at Troy. Only later was his figure fully deified.

Participants in the Trojan War (Achilles, Agamemnon, Odysseus): After Heinrich Schliemann excavated the real Troy, it became obvious that the war really happened. This means that the kings of Achaean Greece who stormed the city had real historical prototypes under them, whose biographies the poets embellished with divine origin.

Dionysus: There is still controversy surrounding this god of winemaking and ecstasy. Many researchers believe that the basis of the cult of Dionysus was the story of a real religious reformer or preacher who brought new rituals to Greece from Thrace or Lydia, and after his death was included in the pantheon of the Olympians.

It was these reflections that inspired me to walk the streets of Limassol and peer into the faces of passers-by, looking for descendants of the gods in them - after all, many of these heroes have or had their burial places on our island.

And here is what I managed to find:

1. Adonis (Sacred Grove and Tomb at Ammaus)

Adonis is a beautiful young hunter and lover of Aphrodite, who died while hunting from the fangs of a wild boar. According to one version of the myth, this happened on the Cypriot cape Akamas.

Where they worshipped: The ancient city of Amathus (on the outskirts of modern Limassol). The historian Plutarch mentioned that in Ammaus there was a sacred grove of Adonis and Aphrodite, where people worshiped his "grave". As the god of nature, which withers and resurrects, he ritually "died" and "resurrected" every spring.

2. Ariadne (Tomb at Ammaus)

According to a rare, but recorded by Plutarch, Cypriot version of the myth, Theseus, having escaped from the Cretan Labyrinth, fled with Ariadne (daughter of King Minos). However, during a storm, their ship was washed ashore on the shores of Cyprus. Theseus was forced to go ashore, and the pregnant Ariadne was carried out to sea. Local women took care of her, but she died during childbirth.

Where is it located: The same city of Amathus. Plutarch wrote that Theseus later returned and left money for rituals in her honor, and Ariadne's tomb itself was arranged in a sacred grove, which the locals called the "Gay of Ariadne-Aphrodite".

3. Teucer (Founder of Salamis)

Teucer is a legendary hero of the Trojan War, the best archer of the Greek army and the brother of the great Ajax. After the fall of Troy, his father expelled Teucer from his native island of Salamis (in Greece). Teucer sailed to Cyprus and founded a new city here, naming it in honor of his homeland - Salamis (the ruins of which are located near Famagusta).

Historical Trace: Although the exact location of the mound is lost, ancient sources claimed that Teucer ruled Cyprus until the end of his days and was buried with honors in the territory of the kingdom of Salamis he founded, becoming the founder of the local royal dynasty.
