Termites When you first get to the endless plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania, the first thing that starts to attract your attention is the termite mounds. These majestic structures, similar to the buildings of aliens, willy-nilly make you reflect on the life of a multimillion community. There are almost three thousand species of termites in the world. Contrary to popular belief, termites are closely related to cockroaches, not ants. Worker termites are virtually blind - their eyes are either rudimentary or completely absent. Reproductive termites, on the other hand, see very well. The termites responsible for reproduction have wings, but they use them only once in a lifetime, after which the wings are discarded as unnecessary. Ancient termites, including representatives of now extinct species, are often found in amber. Termites live on all continents except Antarctica.
