Exhibition of Polish photographer Krzysztof Geraltowski in the Odessa Maritime Art Gallery 2007

Exhibition of Polish photographer Krzysztof Geraltowski
Krzysztof Geraltowski has been dealing all his life with the most ungrateful and capricious models that a photographer can get. For more than half a century, he has been working in acting make-up rooms and on film sets - it turns out that even Anrzej Wajda and Daniel Olbrychsky need hundreds of shots to feel the outline of the future image.
Unlike many colleagues who try to “expose” celebrities with the help of photographs, to guess who they really are, Krzysztof does not hide that he is in love with the element of play.
Therefore, he allows his models any eccentricities: grimaces, wigs, costumes, false noses - everything goes into action where the eternal spirit of acting requires it. The fact that the heroes of the portraits come out exactly as they really are is not at all surprising: who knows better than a frequent visitor on the wings that the only way to understand an actor is to ask him to play himself.
Krzysztof has his own approach to portraiture. He strives not only for the similarity of the image with the original but also creates an image that can tell about a person, convey his character, occupation, habits, etc.
Each portrait of Krzysztof is not just a face shot in the right angle and the right light, it carries deep symbolism, revealing the soul of the person depicted on it. “I grab the person and invite him to my studio!” Says Pan Geraltovsky. And there I already incline him to my adventurous ideas.
He puts a bow on his head for the most real macho, wraps his face with a newspaper for a famous journalist, depicts an inveterate smoker without the head, as she drowned in puffs of smoke.
Willy-nilly, everyone looking at the rows of portraits “from Geraltovsky” will think: “How would he portray me?
